Anirudh Mathur acted pro bono for KN, an asylum-seeker, in an application to the European Court of Human Rights. KN sought interim measures preventing his removal to Rwanda on a charter flight scheduled for 10.30pm on 14 June 2022. Anirudh was instructed in light of his prior experience of ECtHR applications, including for interim measures under Rule 39.
The ECtHR granted the request on the afternoon of 14 June, following which KN’s removal directions were cancelled.
Based on this initial grant of interim measures for KN, further relief was sought from domestic courts and the ECtHR by other individuals who subsequently had their removal directions cancelled. Ultimately none of the asylum-seekers due to be removed have been removed and the charter flight was cancelled.
Anirudh was instructed by Duncan Lewis, as part of a team led by Raza Husain QC.
