As
part of the Sport Resolutions panel of specialist sports law advocates and upon
a request from the British Athletes Commission, the Head of the Sports Law
Group at Littleton, John Mehrzad represented Kelda
Wood, a KL3 para-canoeist, in an urgent appeal against her non-selection to the
World Championships. Participation at the World Championships is a
condition to selection for the Rio Paralympics. The appeal was successful
and the panel took the exceptional step to select her directly to the
World Championships.
As
she now returns to her intensive training regime for the World Championships
and then hopefully onto Rio, Kelda took time to comment, “I can’t thank you
enough for all your help John”.
John
and members of the Sports Law Group at Littleton are one of the few legal
experts in the area of selection challenges. The subject matter is
discussed by John and Edward Wheen, Partner at Hewitson Moorhead solicitors who
has represented several national governing bodies, most notably British
Taekwondo in the Aaron Cook selection challenge before London 2012, here. Their recent detailed article for the “World Sports
Law Report” on the subject is here.
