Contractual terms
Littleton Chambers’ barristers provide services under our Standard Terms of Business (last revised May 2025). A privacy notice for clients, prospective clients, and professional contacts is available on our website.
These are the published standard terms of Littleton Chambers’ barristers within the meaning of Rule rC30.9(o)(B) of the Bar Standards Board Handbook. Accordingly, except for legal aid and CPS instructions, the ‘cab rank’ rule does not apply where instructions are offered on terms other than these standard terms.
Our terms apply to instructions from Authorised Persons (including solicitors). For alternative instruction routes, such as public access, please contact our clerks.
For any questions about these arrangements, please contact our clerking team.
Charging for our services
Our skilled clerks provide fee estimates and budgets tailored to each instruction. Fees are usually based on hourly rates, reflecting the barrister’s expertise, skills, matter complexity, and market rates. Alternative structures such as fixed or capped fees may be agreed where appropriate.
Hearing fees typically consist of a fixed brief fee (covering preparation and the first day) plus refresher fees for subsequent days. In suitable cases, additional or damages-based agreements may be considered.
VAT is charged where applicable, and VAT numbers are available on request from the clerking team. Barristers’ expenses are added only if agreed in advance.
Client confidentiality and information barriers
We recognise the importance of client confidentiality, and our barristers and staff team all understand the importance and duty to keep the affairs of each client confidential.
Unlike solicitors practicing in partnership, members of chambers may be instructed on opposing sides of a case. Given our size and expertise, this occurs frequently. We have a protocol in chambers to safeguard confidentiality and operate a strict Information Barriers policy. Each party is supported by a separate clerking team, ensuring full separation of advice and administration.

Fees for routine Employment Tribunal cases
If you instruct one of our barristers on a public access basis for routine Employment Tribunal proceedings, namely ordinary unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal proceedings, we are able to provide more specific guidelines as to pricing and timescales.
Please note these guidelines apply to advice and representation given to employers or employees in ordinary unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal claims.
They do not apply where there are other claims.
Timescales
Timescales for your case may vary depending on factors such a barrister’s availability, the complexity of your case, the need for additional documents, and the other side’s approach. As pure guidance only, more straight forward ET cases tend to have a hearing date fixed within 6 months of a claim being made.
Fees
We may charge fixed fees for routine cases, which means we will charge a set amount of money for the work. In the chart below, we set out a range of fixed fees for Direct Access Barristers at Littleton doing the specific examples of work.
All fees quoted are exclusive of VAT and there may be additional expenses such as travel and accommodation which are also not included. The level of fixed fee will depend on the seniority of the Barrister or the complexity of the case. For particularly complex cases, fixed fees may not be appropriate.
