Dr. Johanne Cox is an International Arbitrator and Associate Tenant with Littleton Chambers.
Johanne is a dual-qualified Barrister and Solicitor-Advocate with over 20 years’ practicing experience. She has led arbitration practices at top-tier law firms in London and Cairo and has unique experience of the Middle East and Africa having spent a decade working in the region (2010 to 2020) in Egypt, the UAE and Qatar.
Johanne arbitrates commercial, corporate, technology, energy, transport, infrastructure, construction and investment disputes and has been appointed Sole, Chair/Presiding and Co-Arbitrator in arbitrations seated in London, Dubai, the DIFC, Qatar and Singapore under the LCIA, ICC, DIAC, DIFC-LCIA, SCC and SIAC Rules with magic circle firms, US law firms, and prominent local law firms acting as counsel.
In addition to arbitrating commercial disputes, Johanne accepts arbitral appointments in investment treaty disputes. Johanne has leading expertise in investment treaty arbitration and has acted as counsel representing both foreign investors and states in ICSID arbitrations. Her book, Expropriation in Investment Treaty Arbitration, Oxford University Press (2019), is a global publication.
Johanne is a Certified International Arbitrator, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution, a Barrister Member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, and a Member of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
As well as sitting as an arbitrator, Johanne also accepts appointments as mediator in commercial disputes. She is an Accredited Mediator, a member of the Society of Mediators and a professional member of the MENA Mediation Hub.
