David Reade QC and Niran de Silva appeared in the Supreme Court for the Appellant in Hounga v Allen. The appeal is the first case which commenced as a Free Representation Unit case to reach the Supreme Court. David appeared Pro Bono in the Court of Appeal, [2012] IRLR 685. The case concerns the impact on discrimination law of contractual illegality and the Common Law doctrine of Ex Turpi Causa. Issues within the appeal, on the impact of international obligations towards the victims of trafficking, additionally led to the intervention of Anti Slavery International. David and Niran were instructed by the Anti Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit supported by the EHRC.
